Shin splints, Tennis elbow

Shin splints: inflammation of the periost (the thin membrane surrounding the bone) of the shin caused by trauma or repetitive strain.

Physiotherapy can help regenerate the periost after a trauma and find the cause of the repetitive strain. Often this is to be found in the biomechanic of the foot. In this case foot exercises, proprioception exercises and footwear advice will help. Corrective insoles may be needed.

Tennis elbow: a painful inflammation of the tendon of the outer border of the elbow, caused by overuse of the forearm muscles.

Physiotherapy can help firstly with stretching exercises, frictions, and electrotherapy and massage first and later with strengthening exercises. Sometimes a treatment of the lower neck is also needed. Suggestions about training reconditioning are also part of the treatment.

What most people don’t know is that a dysfunction of the TMJ, whatever the cause, can be the origin of many aches and pains in the neck, face and head.

Heavy and unusual physical work can cause sore muscles and a heavy feeling in the lower back, neck, arms and even legs. This feeling usually is more noticeable when we try to move after a period of rest and disappears when we start moving around and it is usually forgotten about after a couple of days.A hot bath and a massage will help to make you feel better and get ready for another hard day.

We are pleased to announce that we are running courses of six Pilates classes at swissphysio on Thursdays starting on Thursday 24th April. Pilates is a form of exercise which focuses on the “core “or postural muscles. The slow and controlled movements help to strengthen the muscles which support the spine, which in turn keep the body balanced. Carried out correctly, Pilates can help to relieve back pain and improve abdominal muscle strength.
