MLD Manual Lymphatic Drainage

North East Lymphoedema Service at swissphysio provides all aspects of Manual Lymphatic Drainage & Combined Decongestive Therapy

The service offered is comprehensive for Lymphoedema, ranging from courses of intensive Decongestive Lymphoedema Therapy treatment consisting of manual lymphatic drainage massage (MLD) together with multi layer Lymphoedema bandaging (MLLB), compression garment measuring, skin care, and exercise regimes to maintenance treatments to keep Lymphoedema  under control and prevent the development of fibrosis which can affect drainage.

The service also treats Lipoedema and other chronic oedematous conditions.
Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual and the condition being treated.   Early treatment of Lymphoedema is always recommended and Fiona is happy to answer any questions at any time.

Treatment

On your first visit a consultation will be carried out to ascertain your condition.  Medical information will be gathered and you will be measured to establish the volume of the oedema.

As lymphoedema is a medical condition it is necessary to write to your GP and advise them of the treatment and confirm the diagnosis.A treatment plan will then be discussed and agreed with you and your first treatment appointment arranged.

Depending on the condition of the lymphoedema, the treatment plan may consist of an intensive programme up to 10 sessions of Manual Lymphatic Drainage of the affected limb or limbs. Where there is fibrosis or scarring, treatment of these areas will be included and if bandaging is required that will be carried out at the end of each treatment.Where the lymphoedema is mild or under control a maintenance programme will ensure the condition is preserved.

Skin care will be discussed to ensure the skin is kept in good condition.Exercise is a very important component of the treatment plan and as a Certified Lebed Method Instructor, Fiona will give guidance for appropriate exercises.

If compression garmenting is required you will be measured for the most appropriate garment for your condition.  Bandages and garments are usually available on prescription.

North East Lymphoedema Service will provide the necessary information for the GP prescription. If you have any questions at any time - please do not hesitate to ask.

News

What most people don’t know is that a dysfunction of the TMJ, whatever the cause, can be the origin of many aches and pains in the neck, face and head.

Heavy and unusual physical work can cause sore muscles and a heavy feeling in the lower back, neck, arms and even legs. This feeling usually is more noticeable when we try to move after a period of rest and disappears when we start moving around and it is usually forgotten about after a couple of days.A hot bath and a massage will help to make you feel better and get ready for another hard day.

We are pleased to announce that we are running courses of six Pilates classes at swissphysio on Thursdays starting on Thursday 24th April. Pilates is a form of exercise which focuses on the “core “or postural muscles. The slow and controlled movements help to strengthen the muscles which support the spine, which in turn keep the body balanced. Carried out correctly, Pilates can help to relieve back pain and improve abdominal muscle strength.
