When the head feels heavy, the shoulders ache and everything is a pain in the neck

Pain in the neck

Hands up who has already experienced a bad neck and / or shoulder. Also hands up who usually says "I know, my posture is horrible but..I work at the computer, or it has been like this for the past 40 years..."

An upright (sitting) posture is the most energy efficient and structure protective one, like in a well aligned and oiled car. Poor posture means that the muscles and all other structures have to work in a strained way and become weak and unable to cope with sudden increased workload, quick movements and less likely to support your neck in the unlucky event of a whiplash.

Here how you can start:

  • Sitting upright with your feet flat on the floor imagine you want to elongate the back of your neck and send the crown of your head to the ceiling. Shoulders are relaxed and the chest is open. Now tuck the chin in and move your head slightly back, like you were closing a drawer. Look forwards and not on the floor while doing this.
Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 5-10x.

  • In bed make sure that your head is supported with the pillow or a rolled up towel. Repeat the exercise like above gently pressing against the towel.
Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 5-10x.
